Bottom of the Pends

The Pends is the road that runs from St Andrews Harbour up to the Cathedral.

The walls here are probably built using the stone from the ruined cathedral. I doubt very much that they are original medieval city walls, especially since there is now a public toilet in the round tower on the left of this photo. The building on the right with the large cross on it, is the old town mortuary, this is now also a public ladies toilet.

Hope Park Church

The congregation has had a number of different homes since it was formed back in 1738, but the current building, pictured above, was built in 1865. Currently the church is undergoing refurbishment so the congregation have been moved once again, this time to Strathkinness Church for the duration of the rennovations.

Madras College in Spring

Madras College South Street, I took this shot last april when the trees were still covered in blossom.

Madras College, Founded in 1833 by Rev. Dr. Andrew Bell, is a listed building situated in the centre of St Andrews. The school itself is a split site school, this building houses 4th, 5th and 6th year pupils.

Butts Wynd

The interestingly named Butts Wynd in St Andrews. Connecting North Street and The Scores. The clock tower is the steeple of St Salvators Chapel.

Hole in the Wall

This is one of the gates in the sandstone walls that surround St Leonards School in St Andrews. Like many old walls in the town it is most likely built using the stone from ruined St Andrews Cathedral.

The “turrets” look to be purely for asthenics rather than function.

Market Street

This is the east end of Market street in St Andrews and leads down to South Castle Street. One of the cobbled lanes that you find in the old part of town.

With the exception of the Gospel Hall and a second hand book shop this street is mainly residential.

McIntosh Hall

Also known as “Chattan” this university residence stretches the full length of Abbotsford Crescent.

The original McIntosh Hall was acquired by the University in 1921 and subsequently extended.

In other news: I spent a my lunch hour taking some more photos for the Holy Trinity Church website today. Hopefully these will be online soon. Can’t remember the last time I spent that amount of time in a church

Hamilton Hall

Opening in 1895 this building was originally called the Grand Hotel. Commissioned by Thomas Hamilton allegedly after the Royal and Ancient Golf Club rejected his membership application.

During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned by the Armed Forces and it never returned to being a hotel.

After the war it was aquired by the University of St Andrews and between 1949 and 2006 it was use as one of the Halls of Residence. In 2006 it was sold to a group who had hoped to turn it in to a prestigious residence club, however they seemed to run out of money and in December 2009 Herb Kohler bought the building. Kohler also owns the Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, (among others) and currently has plans to restore Hamilton Hall.
